I have the option to study abroad next semester, and I’ve always had my heart set on it. However, 10 months ago I got into my first serious, long-term relationship. I’ve traveled a LOT internationally already, and I could always go or live abroad in the future. Should I stay or go?
Dear International Affairs,
Go! Go as far and as wide as you possibly can. You are young, and have more opportunities now then you may ever have again. I know it may seem scary to leave behind your ten-month relationship, but if you are confident in it, then there shouldn’t be anything you guys can’t work through. Sit down and talk to them about your concerns and your aspirations, and ask them how they feel about you studying abroad. If they truly care about you, they will support your decision and you both will find a way to make it work. You may have traveled a lot internationally, but studying abroad is a different experience. Being able to learn in a different country with new people is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I urge you to jump into the unknown. Remember that just because you are going to study abroad, doesn’t mean that your relationship is doomed. If both of you try, you can make long distance work. And even if things don’t work out with your SO, you have your entire life ahead of you. Don’t let this one relationship hold you back from living your best life. I wish the best for you and hope you decide to take this amazing opportunity.
