The USF athletics department completed the necessary paperwork on Oct. 4 to officially welcome esteemed professional runner Shannon Rowbury to the cross country program as a volunteer assistant coach.

Rowbury grew up in San Francisco and attended Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School, which is less than ten minutes from the Hilltop. She recalls attending high school basketball games played in War Memorial Gymnasium, back when it was called the Bruce-Mahoney Gym.

In her college career at Duke University, she was an All-American and broke 13 school records — five of which she still holds.

She has competed in three Summer Olympics: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016. Additionally, she is also part of a world record-holding relay team.

At home, Shannon has won seven U.S. Gold Medals: two outdoors, four indoors and one on the road mile. She broke the American record for the 2-mile run in 2014 with a time of 9:20.25. That record stood for nearly four years before being surpassed this past April. As well, she broke the American record for the 5000m in 2016 and held it until this past summer. Rowbury is also a member of the Nike Oregon Project, a training group comprised of elite distance runners.

Rowbury is the current American record holder in the 1500m with a time of 3:56.29 (recorded on July 17, 2015). The previous record had stood for 32 years.

On May 2, 2015, Rowbury ran alongside Americans Ajee’ Wilson, Treniere Moser and Sanya Richards-Ross to run the Distance Medley Relay. The team put up a time of 10:36.50, a world record which still stands to this day.

She will bring her expertise and years of experience at the highest level of her sport to a Dons Cross Country program that is already one of the best in the nation. The women’s team is the defending West Coast Conference and NCAA West Region champion and finished second at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
