MEN’S SOCCER: Last year the men’s soccer team ended their season with a 7 – 1 – 11 record. The Dons started off strong with a four-game winning streak in the first week of September, but fell apart after losing five in a row and were not able to get back on track. The Dons were on the wrong side of one goal decisions, which hurt their record and chances of getting into the playoffs.
The 2008 season started on August 29 for the Dons in Evanston, IL in the Lakeside Classic at Northwestern University. Unfortunately, the Dons were swept on the road in the tournament and they lost 1 – 0 both to Northwestern and Northern Illinois. The Dons are led by seniors Eric Conner, Kyle Schlumpf, Jeff Russell and head coach Eric Visser. There are also new faces on the team this year with 13 freshmen on the roster. Hopefully the Dons can turn around their losing streak in their home-opener on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Lady Dons’ 2007 season could have been better. With a 2 – 1 – 16 record, the Dons could not find the goal after being shut out 13 times in 19 games. After losing their first five games, the team seemed to turn it around by defeating both WCC rivals Gonzaga and St. Mary’s, still they could not find their footing and lost their next nine games.
The Lady Dons kicked off their season at home on August 22 with a 1 – 0 win against Fresno State and another win against Northern Colorado, defeating them 1 – 0 on the road. Unfortunately, the Lady Dons lost their next match against Colorado 4 – 1. Maybe seniors Anika Steig, Katie Hodgson, Alexis Mielke, Stephanie Randall and Katherine Kimure can turn the 2008 season around for the team and improve their record from last year.
VOLLEYBALL: The Dons’ volleyball team in the 2007-2008, season showed that they were a force to be reckoned with by winning 16 of their 28 games. The Lady Dons started off the season by winning the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge after defeating every challenger they faced. The Lady Dons even made the playoffs. Although they did not get very far, the Dons showed strength and potential for this year’s season.
The Lady Dons kicked off the 2008-2009 season on August 29 in the Long Beach Tournament, where they were swept 3 -1 and 3 – 0. But the Dons are hosting the Asics/Powerade Challenge on September 5 at War Memorial Gym. With the leadership of seniors Carly Babin, Darcy Carroll, Alix Gombos, Zuzana Bednarova and Addie Webster, the Lady Dons have a good chance of reclaiming their title.
GOLF: Seniors Kenny Adams, Taylor Hobin, Moses Kahalekulu and Gary Nelson II and juniors Danielle Cvitanov, Diana Hong, Natasha Podmore and Christina Stockton led the men’s and women’s golf teams in the 2007-2008 season. The men’s golf team ended their last match in seventh place at the WCC Championships in Washington State. The women’s team came in second in the WCC Championships and went on to play in the NCAA Championships. With all of their returning players, the women’s team should be able to get back to where they were at the end of last season. The men’s team starts play on September 8 in the Olympic Club Intercollegiate Tournament in San Francisco.
