Dear ASUSF Funded Account Officers,
I am writing to you as student leaders with a far-reaching impact on our campus community to ask for your help. Recently ASUSF Senate has examined the student activity fee and the student activity fee allocation process. In doing so, we have discovered that our current budget does not provide for the existing programs and needs that are being proposed by student organizations and for other student-led initiatives. Some of these initiatives are outlined below in the statement that will be included on the ballot next week during the ASUSF Senate elections. Many of the potential cuts in funding will affect all students in that we would see an increased cost to enjoy the various campus activities that take place on campus.
As it relates specifically to Funded Account organizations, the budget proposals that are submitted to the ASUSF Senate Finance Committee generally exceed the available budget by roughly $100,000. This has forced the Finance Committee to cut back on much needed supplies, equipment, performances, events, and initiatives of funded account organizations. As a University that struggles with school spirit and engagement, this has been detrimental to our cause. In addition, costs for University services such as food service, facilities, and space have gone up while the student activity fee budget has remained the same for the past six years, and is much lower than that of our sister Jesuit institutions. [USF’s fee is currently $82/semester compared to an average of $120/semester.] Finally, the proposed budgets for next year have exceeded the activity budget by over $200,000. The Finance Committee will have to make some extraordinary cuts this year in order to keep Funded Accounts afloat in the next academic year.
I write to implore you to vote YES on Referendum S10-11-1 during ASUSF Senate elections next week. A YES vote will ensure the future of the wonderful student activities and events that we have all come to enjoy. A NO vote would mean a major decrease in student engagement on campus for years to come. Please share this message widely with your organization members, peers, and friends. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com. Thank you!
