Campus Activities Board (CAB), the student organization in charge of events, is currently gearing up for Donaroo, its biggest event of the year. Headlining the concert is Ty Dolla $ign. But who is the opener?
Each year, prior to Donaroo, CAB hosts a DJ competition. The winner of each year’s competition becomes Donaroo’s opening act.
This year’s champion, Jasper Tay, is known by the stage name “JAXX T.” Tay is no stranger to hard work and dedication. He came in second place at last year’s DJ competition and decided to come back this year to claim his crown.
Tay’s interest in DJing began in 2012 when he was 16 years old. By 2016, he began his professional career as JAXX T. He has played at nightclubs in Shanghai and got his first big break as a headliner for Fifth Dimension Electronic Music Festival in Shenzhen, China.
“Usually at nightclubs back in Shanghai, I play mostly towards a mainstream EDM (electronic dance music) crowd,” Tay said. “After coming to the states, I realize that people here love Bay Area hip-hop or West Coast hip-hop. Since then, I’ve been learning how to mix hip-hop and rap music.”
“I consider myself a multi-genre DJ,” Tay said in regards to his style. “Even though I’m from Singapore, I love mixing songs that are from the states, China and from all around the world. I love to incorporate a few different genres in my sets to keep the party goers entertained.”
So what should we expect from him at Donaroo? “For my sets, I don’t usually stick to a specific playlist,” Tay said. “I love mixing different genres around to spice things up. Expect a diverse, multi-genre, multicultural set. We are here at USF where we embrace diversity. I will do my best to incorporate all the cultural songs into my set. It’s gonna be an interesting one.”
