Melissa’s Mix Tape: Memories of Alt Rock

In late elementary school, middle school and early high school, Seattle’s alternative rock station 107.7 The End completely shaped my musical taste. Around my junior year, they sold off the station to some big company, fired all the good DJs and started broadcasting Adam Carolla’s syndicated morning show. Essentially, the station started to completely suck. However, those five or six years of solid alternative rock education remain with me today. Those bands are some of the best to listen to while riding Muni (gotta drown out everyone else somehow), walking around the city (while playing air guitar/drums) or just hanging out around the house. These are some of my favorites to this day.

1) “April 29, 1992 (Miami)” by Sublime off of “Sublime”

2) “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden off of “Superunknown”

3) “Come Out and Play” by the Offspring off of “Smash”

4) “Lump” by President’s of the United States of America off of “The President’s of the United States of America”

5) “Kiss Off” by the Violent Femmes off of “Violent Femmes”

6) “Story of My Life” by Social Distortion off of “Social Distortion”

7) “Basket Case” by Green Day off of “Dookie”

8) “Chewin’ George Lucas’ Chocolate” by the Butthole Surfers off of “Independent Worm Salon”

9) “Dumpweed” by Blink-182 off of “Enema of the State”

10) “Lake of Fire” by the Meat Puppets off of “Meat Puppets II”
