OHB: Operation Hot Body

I have struggled with getting fit and shedding some pounds after the holidays all 21 years of my life and have found only a few key things that work EVERY year. I was inspired to write this because my roommate and I are preparing ourselves for spring break. I didn’t realize it was only TWO weeks away. Ahh! We are not ready to get into our bikinis! It seems like every year at this time, everyone is hustling to slim down and lose weight. We all know to hit the gym and eat what’s healthy but we rarely do so because it’s a pain. I have read thousands of articles regarding dieting. I don’t want to hear that I need to eat less or to eat fruits and veggies all day.  So what are the key elements to staying fit? And what about after the break? Because spring break is just a hint that summer is near…
5 ways to get ready for spring break!

Don’t eat late.  Set a time for yourself at least two hours before you sleep. Eat dinner and have a snack way before you go to bed. It’s easy to reach for that bag of chips while studying late at night, but if you need to munch, do it during the day and reach for that apple late at night.

Don’t eat in front of a TV! This leads to more eating while watching another episode of NCIS … and then you eat again. All the while you become an expert procrastinator … y’all know what I’m talking about.  Make it a rule that you eat with friends at the cafeteria or eat at your kitchen table while you read for homework!

Attend classes at the gym! Koret provides free classes to students! Find out what classes fit your schedule and make it a priority as if it was an ACTUAL academic class. If you want a bikini ready body for spring break, you have to hit the gym! I personally love Spin Class and the Abs and Glutes Class. Spin classes are great and attract lots of students! Not only does it work-out your legs, but your core. Don’t be intimidated by the loud music when you pass the room in the gym. At the beginning of class, all the instructors ask who is new and are willing to speak with you to get you started! You will actually enjoy attending these types of classes. The best part? You grade yourself at the end of class depending on how
much sweat you produced.

EAT BREAKFAST! I am sure you’ve heard it all before but it really is the most important meal of the day. Make it a habit to eat breakfast in the morning and you will eat less throughout the day. I know hitting the snooze button for an extra 10 minutes of sleep is a ritual but set it for 20 minutes earlier so you can make time! (I have an alarm on my iPhone set for an hour before I have to leave my house and it rings every ten minutes! Trust me, your smartphone has more than one alarm!) Even oatmeal with sliced banana or cereal is good enough to fuel your brain. Otherwise, you will
have a big lunch, get sleepy during the afternoon, grab a coffee and another snack, and then eat a big dinner again, and a midnight snack. Sound familiar? It’s probably not working if you’re reading this article.

Make H20 your new best friend. I’ve read magazines my whole life and in every supermodel interview their secret contains: drinking lots of water! Skip the diet sodas and sugar loaded juices and drink pure H20! It cleanses your body and keeps you hydrated. If you are a coffee drinker, opt for tea instead. Addicted to coffee and the Starbucks down the street? Try allowing yourself one cup of coffee per day and the rest of your day is water only! Water is the key element to losing weight and looking great! Not only will you lose weight but get great skin as well. What a plus!
