In a few short weeks, a group of dedicated students planned USF’s first annual Relay for Life. Although the event is known nationwide, this is the first time it has ever been coordinated on campus. Relay For Life Manager and liaison for USF’s planning group Michelle Van Hoff noted that this is one of the fastest Relays she has seen coordinated, in just under two months.
Relay is a 24-hour event that brings cancer awareness, in which teams walk together in laps around a track or predetermined area. Participants walk to remember those who lost their battle with cancer, support those currently struggling and celebrate those who have triumphed over the disease. The American Cancer Society, the umbrella organization for Relay for Life, explains that the event is 24 hours because “cancer never sleeps.” Each Relay raises money that benefits cancer research through the American Cancer Society.
Students and the USF Alumni Association are coordinating Relay for Life, with support from ASUSF Senate and the office of Student Leadership and Engagement.
Event Chair Adam Lawicki said his connection with Relay for Life is personal. “When I was 16 years old my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. When I first heard about Relay, I pledged to her that I would walk 24 hours without stopping. Now I am the Co-Event Chairperson of the first annual Relay for Life at USF,” he said. Lawicki encourages everyone at USF to take a stand against cancer and join the cause, whether this year or in future Relays.
Relay for Life at USF will be held at 2 p.m. from April 30 to May 1, continuing in the 24-hour tradition. The route will be along Welsh Field between Kalmanovitz Hall and St. Ignatius. Community members can form teams up until the event takes place on April 30th.
