With the Don’s basketball season around the corner, our team and the team down the street on 19th Avenue, San Francisco State, played in an exhibition match on Thurs, November 5th. The Don’s and Gator’s played the preseason game here at War Memorial with a turnout of more than 1,000 people. When the final buzzer rang SFSU looked down while USF looked up to an 87-76 scoreline in their favor.
The two teams had solid performances all around. Being a preseason game USF coach Rex Walters decided to experiment with lineups and minute allocations. Freshman forward Nate Renfro impressed on the night with his 31 minutes on the court. Renfro shot 4-of-5 from the floor for and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe for 13 points, he also pulled down nine boards. Going into his second year with high expectations, sophomore guard Devin Watson also lit up the scoreboard with 25 of his own points, 15 of which came in a big first half. Senior forward Montray Clemons added 11 points off the bench and fellow senior, guard Tim Derksen, added 15 points. USF shot an efficient 47.2 percent from the field and State a lesser 43.1 percent. Each team also put on a show from range making 11 three-pointers each. Walter’s was also happy to handout out playing time to four other new-comers, their first bit of game-time as a part of the team. Though the score ended 11 points apart, with 5:30 remaining the Dons were only leading 71-67. The Dons rolled out a 10-0 run to cushion the score 81-67 with 2:55 remaining. USF stretched the lead to 15, 87-72, with 1:18 left. San Francisco walked away successful with an 87-76 win, a great team effort and experience for some of the younger and inexperienced players. The Don’s will take all their off-season prep work and lessons learned from their preseason game into the regular season with hopes of making noise in the WCC.
The team’s regular season will kick off Friday, November 13th against the University of Illinois-Chicago at 5PM. Be sure to watch it live on ESPN3 or follow the live stream on usfdons.com
