Senate Briefings

Counseling and Psychological Services Department

Starting at the beginning of the school year, Counseling and Psychological Services Department (CAPS), instituted a number of changes to their operations. Barbara Thomas, Senior Director at CAPS, spoke to ASUSF senators and executives regarding the department’s attempts at accommodating an “incredibly burgeoning” wait list.
“We have made some difficult, but what appear to be good decisions,” said Thomas.
Among some of the changes include the implementation of a triage system, which according to Thomas has received “mixed reviews.”
A 30 minute phone call with a CAPS representative determines whether or not patients are right for the services. Seven percent of inquirers are usually referred elsewhere.
“What we found is we were seeing a good amount of people who had very extensive histories, so we instituted this consultation program,” said Thomas.
The department also made key changes to their personnel. There are no longer any licensed psychologists at CAPS. According to Ms. Thomas, this will enable CAPS to see more clients. “We decided to take that money and buy two qualified interns who can do 20 hours of work each.”
Whereas patients were allowed a maximum of 6 visits to CAPS per semester, they will now be given a maximum of 10 visits per year. This has been the biggest complaint among clients thus far said Thomas.
“I don’t think it’s had a significant impact on our client flow, but we will have to reevaluate that change come the end of the year” she added.

ASUSF-Athletics Collaboration

With the USF basketball season set to kick off November 11 against North Dakota State in the Hilltop Challenge, the athletics department and several student organizations are planning to participate in a tailgate event prior to the game. The event will include a barbeque.
“The university hired a new athletic director [Scott Sidwell] over the summer and we are expecting a lot of positive changes to the department,” said Nick Price, athletics administrator on campus.
In hopes of attracting more student participation, the athletic department is hoping to plan six more tailgate events throughout the season.
