Just because campus will be boring over winter break doesn’t mean you have to be. Here is just a slice of the many spots to check out with family and friends if you are staying in San Francisco during the winter break.
‘Tis the Season for Science at the California Academy of Sciences
This year’s annual ‘Tis the Season for Science “celebrates the remarkable adaptations that allow Arctic and Antarctic animals to thrive in snowy ecosystems,” according to the California Academy of Sciences website. There’s a wide range of activities to participate in, from a hands-on polar bear-themed exhibit to ice skating. There will also be a screening of Science of Snow, a short film about the geometry of snowflakes. The film is screened inside a snowman-shaped dome theater. The Academy also offers opportunities to capture the season with indoor snow at the exhibit. General admission, including ‘Tis the Season, is $30.95 for students.
Ice Skating in Union Square
The ice skating rink in the heart of Union Square has been a San Francisco holiday tradition since 2007. The rink caters to beginners and experts. “I was really scared, but the atmosphere was really nice and they encouraged people of all skill levels. The music was great and overall a great place to go on a date or even go with friends and family,” said sophomore James Zumel-Dumlao, who said it was his second time ever skating. Tickets are $18 for admission, figure or hockey skate rentals included. The rink is also offering skating lessons from professional skate instructors every weekend from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Lessons are free for those who sign up in advance.
Illuminate SF Festival of Light
Illuminate SF is a full 39 days to discover 37 light art installations by 34 artists in 17 neighborhoods. This festival celebrates the city’s culture of creativity and innovation. Lisa Hasenbalg, the senior director of arts and culture strategy at San Francisco Travel, says that in some cases, visitors get the chance to hear directly from the artists. “You discover a new way to look at public art: what went into creating the work and how complex it can be to incorporate technology into art that is exposed to the elements and accessible to the public.” Two installations close to USF are: “The Seed” in the Castro and “Photosynthesis: Love for all Seasons” at the Conservatory of Flowers. “The Seed” is a collection of six abstract LED dandelions that tower 13 feet tall. “Photosynthesis” is a series of illuminations of the fall, winter and spring scenes on the Conservatory’s facade. Illuminate SF Festival of Light ends New Year’s Day.
