Are You Ready for Some Football: Snacks to make your taste buds smile on game day

The time has finally come to turn in my baseball caps and become fully devoted to my first true love: football. The sport not only brings with it muscular men in spandex (no complaints here), but allows society a day of snacking with little to no remorse. Here are my top picks for the best Sunday munching.

Five Layer Dip and Chips

Chips and dip are both super delicious and simple to make. My top pick for pre-made dip is Trader Joe’s Five Layer Fiesta Dip. Black beans, salsa, sour cream, cheese and guacamole all layered atop the other… what more could you ask for? All you need now is some tasty tortilla chips and your game face. Serve the chips in a plastic bowl so you can chuck it at the TV in true football fan fashion when a bum call is made.

Sliders

Sometimes taking something already awesome and miniaturizing it makes it even better: dogs, backpacks, cupcakes… hamburgers. Sliders, the miniature version of the classic burger, make what was once a big meal into a lighter snack perfect for your game day munching. All the ingredients for sliders are exactly the same as a normal sized hamburger and mini buns are available at most grocery stores. The condiments are up to you. I prefer the standard mayo, mustard, ketchup, cheese, lettuce and onions. Tomatoes upset me.

Hot Diggity Dog Chili

This game day snack, or should I say meal, is a favorite of Papa Spellacy himself. He could never resist the scrumptious combination of chili and hot dogs, and made a heaping bowl whenever football graced the family television. He preferred Dennison’s Hot and Chunky Chili with beans and would chop up the hot dogs into bite size pieces. Mix the two together and viola, the tastiest combination of  meat, beans and whatever hot dogs are.

Guilt factor: 8
Stomach hatred factor: 9

So ready your televisions and your stomachs… football season has officially begun. Fire up the grill, and don your favorite apron. Happy snacking!

  1. Great post Heather.

Chips and dip have gotta be my favorite game day snack – What do you say, Guilt factor: 4, if it’s Onion dip and not the Five Layer?

About that Hot Diggity Dog Chili – definitely agree, very high on both the Stomach hatred factor and Guilt factor.

And who could ever resist good Slider?

    Kelli
