The men’s soccer team went 1-0-1 last week, with a zero to one loss against the University of San Diego Toreros (USD) on Oct. 30 and a one score draw versus Oregon State University on Nov. 3.

The home match against the Toreros held high stakes, as both teams were undefeated in conference matches prior to the game. USD came in ranked fourth nationally, and led the West Coast Conference (WCC) standings with an overall record of 10-1-2.

The Dons were the aggressors throughout the game, leading the total shot count 20 to five, with freshman forward David Raphael recording four shots in the first half. Despite USF leading the shots on goal count eight to one, the Toreros’ lone shot on goal was converted by forward Steven Ramirez four minutes into the second half.

USF had numerous chances to equalize, most notably in the seventieth minute when the team recorded four straight missed goal shots within a 20 second interval, two of which were by junior midfielder Olivier Sylvain. USD’s defense proved to be resilient all night, with freshman goalkeeper Donovan Parisian having a career performance, finishing the game with seven saves.

The team continued their rough WCC schedule against the Oregon State University Beavers, who currently rank second in the conference, with an overall record of 9-3-2.

Senior midfielder Gabriel Bracken Serra scored at the 17:33 mark after punching in a deflected penalty kick.

The team will play their final away match at Saint Mary’s College on Nov. 9 and return to the Hilltop for their home finale versus Santa Clara University on Nov. 16.

Women’s soccer hosted senior night on Nov. 9 against Washington State University, losing zero to one. The Cougars threw an early punch, scoring 46 seconds into the game.

USF had plenty of opportunities to tie, particularly in the sixth minute when graduate student and forward Gabby Rizzo’s right side kick bounced off the left post of the goal. Junior forward Lindsey Chau gave the team one last chance on a free kick in the seventy-ninth minute, with the ball curving just to the right.

The team plays their final two regular season games away at Loyola Marymount University on Nov. 6 and at Pepperdine University on Nov. 9.

Both the men and women’s cross country team placed sixth overall in the WCC Championships in Lodi, California at the Micke Grove Golf Course. Junior Natálie Hluší led the women’s team in the 6000 meter race with a time of 21:03, while junior Zach Elam led the men’s team in the 8000 meter race, clocking a time of 24:31. The team will return to Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, California for the Bay Area Invitational, which will be hosted by Santa Clara University on Nov. 9.

Women’s volleyball split their two away matches last week, both of which were decided in the fifth set. On Halloween night, the Dons lost two to three against Saint Mary’s. They rebounded Nov. 2 with a three to two victory against the University of Pacific, winning by a narrow margin of 15 to 13 in the closing set. Graduate student and libero Jolei Akima was named WCC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 4. Akima collected a team high of 47 digs through two games, with 18 against the Gaels and 29 against the Tigers.
