The 22nd-ranked USF Dons men’s soccer team’s losing streak grew to 4 after dropping both matches in its weekend set, losing to 23rd-ranked United States Air Force Academy’s Falcons on Friday night 1-2, then 0-3 to the 5th-ranked Pioneers of the University of Denver on Sunday afternoon 0-3.
On Friday night, the Dons took an early 1-0 on a free kick by junior Matt Orr, giving him his second goal of the season. The Falcons responded quickly, scoring just 2:36 later. Klint Parker scored unassisted on a stolen ball, legging out a defender and potting his second of the season. Air Force took the lead for good on a header by David Louthan at 23:49 in the first half. Sophomore Ruben Stuiver made 6 saves in goal, but overall the Dons were outshot 21-7 (8-4 on goal) and were dominated in the time of possession.
Prospects didn’t improve on Sunday as the Dons lost 0-3 to the Pioneers. The match was deadlocked in the first half, with neither team breaking through. The Pioneers’ Andre Shinyashiki scored his first of three goals at 53:57 on a header off a corner kick, followed by another at 65:05. He then completed his hat trick at 75:20 on an unassisted goal through three Dons defenders. Denver kept the pressure on, attempting 20 shots, 7 on goal, against the Dons, who only mustered nine shots, two on goal. The Dons’ freshman Jake Serpa was issued a yellow card at 79:01, followed by a red card at 84:32. The Dons fell to 2-4-1 on the season, and they’ll look to end their skid during their weekend series against the Anteaters of the University of California, Irvine and the Sacramento State University Hornets on Sept. 20 and Sept. 23, respectively. Both games will be held at Negoesco Stadium.
