Don’t Lose Your Competitive Spirit–Bring it to Intramurals Instead

Fall Registration open now for USF intramural sports

College is a time of unique experiences and memorable moments. From studying all night in the library, to having your first deep conversation with your roommate, to hesitantly agreeing to go on a crazy adventure with your friends,  there is a long list of things that usually only happen in college. Now, imagine this: How awesome would it be if winning an intramural sports championship was added to that list? No matter what else you achieved in school, there would always be that impressive accomplishment that you could remember and brag about as you grow older. For students who hope to reach unprecedented heights and become champions, becoming involved in intramural sports is the perfect opportunity. And if you don’t win a championship in whatever sport you choose to play? No worries, the whole point of intramural sports is to have fun, meet new people, and stay active while occasionally displaying your competitive spirit.

At the University of San Francisco, a wide variety of intramural sports are offered. From badminton to basketball, and from flag football to ultimate frisbee, the program contains something for students with all types
of athletic interests. Many of the sports offer co-recreational leagues, and some offer separate leagues for women and men as well. Intramural basketball even has a league for both male graduate and undergraduate students. Furthermore, intramural sports are available for not only students, but faculty and staff as well, and it is also possible for students to be employed working with the USF Intramural Sports Program as scorekeepers or referees.

Intramural sports seasons last one semester each. Throughout the year in all sports each team is guaranteed to play all the other teams in its league. As far as the playoff format goes, each league will hold a tournament between its top four teams. The teams will be seeded from 1 to 4, with the first seed playing the fourth seed, and the second seed playing the third seed. The winners of those two matches will advance to the finals, where they will have a chance to secure an intramural championship. This championship match will be played only 30 minutes after the two playoff matches before it.

For new students who are looking to have fun playing a sport they love, or returning students who have enjoyed playing an intramural sport in the past, the time to register for intramural sports is coming soon! Registration for the fall semester opens on Friday, Aug. 16 and will close on Friday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 PM. So Dons, now is the time to gather your friends together and begin forming a team, which includes creating a goofy team name and planning as to how you will emerge from your league victorious. And if you do not yet have a team planned out, fear not, because individual sign ups will be open for an extra two weeks after the leagues start. By signing up individually, you can add yourself to a team of your choice, or choose to become a free agent, which allows other teams to pick you up if they are in need of a new player. Whatever the situation may be, intramural sports are a great way to stay in good shape during the school year through activities such as soccer, volleyball, and dodgeball. No matter what sport you participate in, or what team you end up on, these sports will create many fun-filled, unforgettable experiences that you can add to your long list of college endeavors.
