This week’s number two on the KUSF charts is the fourth LP by self-proclaimed “psychedelic soul big band” King Kahn & the Shrines. This former Hazelwood Records standout is headed by Berlin-based King Khan, known also for his collaboration with former Spaceshits lead-man Mark Sultan, now the one-man BBQ show. The Supreme Genius of King Kahn and His Sensational Shrines, released this year on Vice Records, is a spastic, hipster-friendly collection of raucous garage-style tracks edging on the soul side of the street, touting 50’s and 60’s rhythm and blues influences such as Professor Longhair and The Art Ensemble of Chicago as well as the abstract and psychedelic innovation of jazz legend Sun Ra. You can catch King Khan at the Union Square Urban Outfitters on September 24th, where he will be playing for free with a yet unannounced collection of illustrious friends. This show is an exclusive event hosted by KUSF as a part of the Free Yr Radio concert series. Shimmy on over to the Union Square Urban Outfitters this Wednesday, September 24th at 7pm to shake it on up with King Khan & Friends, but don’t forget to print out your free admissions ticket first at www.kusf.org .
