The Go Dons Get Fit Challenge (GDGF) is underway for the month of October, which is an exercise based-competition where students compete against faculty, staff and librarians for accumulating the most exercise minutes by the end of the month.
“It’s a way for students, faculty and staff to incorporate more physical activity, either daily or weekly,” Kaylie Liu, an intern for Health Promotion Services said. “We thought this month is perfect, like a mid semester boost, and we decided over the years to incorporate raffle prizes, just as an incentive and just to make it more of a friendly competition.”
USF, along with the the city of San Francisco, recognizes October as Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIMOC) month, which is a resource whose goal is to teach USF faculty, staff and students the importance of physical activity, as well as provide opportunities to be active. GDGF is one of the ways USF promotes EIMOC.
How to register and enter raffle
On Godonsgetfit.org, those interested in registering can sign up as either a student, or as faculty and staff, and begin logging their exercise workouts. The log setup includes describing what kind of exercise was completed, ranging from light, moderate, strength/resistance and vigorous intensity. Participants can enter in their exercise time and choose one of five moods to show their attitude towards the workout, varying from a smiley face to a sad face.
If given permission, members can view their minutes on a leaderboard, in addition to seeing the total minutes and participants for faculty/staff and students.
Participants can also register under a team with a maximum of six members, to promote team spirit and keep track of total minutes together.
Every week, starting Oct. 10, prizes are raffled to teams and individuals. Teams are awarded team swag bags, which may include USF branded water bottles and shirts. Individuals are entered in a raffle for a $15 Bon Appetit gift card, which can be redeemed in the cafeteria.
To earn more raffle entries, individuals can join in the GDGF Bingo, which includes crossing off fitness based activities. By Nov. 3, the completed bingo card can be emailed to scamhi@usfca.edu using a USFCA email address.
Throughout the month, Gnomad, a big gnome, will be on the move around campus. Participants can take a selfie with him and email the photo to hps@usfca.edu or post it on instagram with the GDGF GIF and tag @gousfca and @usfhps. The most fun photo will win a prize.
